Thanks to your stellar efforts, we have reached and exceeded our goal of raising $50,000 to end violence! As the final numbers came in, we hit $50,169.25!!
While everyone contributed to reach this amazing milestone, some people made tremendous efforts to get sponsored and raise funds. We want to acknowledge and reward the following people’s contribution to getting us over our goal:
Jacqui Guichelaar is the winner of the “Highest Amount Raised” prize, with a whopping $5,405 raised! Incredible! Jacqui wins the roundtrip ticket to anywhere in the U.S.
“Youth Highest Amount Raised” winner is Aidan Joe Evans, who raised a remarkable $1,510! Way to go Aidan! Aidan wins the bicycle donated by Brooklyn Bikes.
The “Greatest Number of Sponsors” winners are (adult) Ruchi Mital with 31 pledges, and (youth) Lucy Brownstein with 19 pledges! Amazing! Lucy wins movie tickets and Ruchi wins a membership to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.
We are so proud of all of our fund raisers and thank them so much for their efforts.

We’ve just been informed that Eileen Murray, a dedicated donor, is inspired by our cutting-edge programs and fundraising efforts for this important cause and has made a generous contribution of $10,000 towards the Punch-a-thon. We are thrilled and utterly grateful for Eileen’s support and everyone who has been working so hard to help us be successful.
As we wrap up our 2011 effort, we wanted to let you know that it’s not too late to help us meet our goal… this Wednesday, June 15th at 11:59PM, we’ll be closing our pledge drive for the 2011 Punch-a-thon and we’re counting on you to help us finish strong. We’re now just a few thousand dollars short of our overall target… if every puncher was able to contribute a bit more, we’d be there!!
Round up those friends that said they’d pledge but haven’t gotten around to it… post a note to your Facebook wall driving people to your pledge site… or even ask Mom and Dad, one more time. It’s for such an incredible cause and will have an immediate impact on our community.
Oh, and did we mention the prizes? Some fabulous prizes for those who raise the most money, too! Thank you again for your ongoing support of CAE… we couldn’t have done it without you!

Here’s an example of an email you can send out to everyone as a reminder.
Dear Friends,
This past weekend was CAE’s Punchathon–and in addition to being an inspiring and empowering event we managed to raise over $25,000 to support CAE’s free violence prevention programs for children, teens, women, LGBT individuals, and survivors of violence!
We are more than half way to reaching our goal and have extended the donation deadline to June 15th! So, if you are able to contribute and missed the last deadline, this is your chance! Just visit: (your fundraising website) to make your pledge.
Any amount sincerely makes a difference and goes to an organization that is very important to me.
Thanks for your support!
It is also good to send personal emails to individual friends/co-workers/family members. Following is an example:
Hey there. You know the Punchathon I have been talking about non-stop? Wanna donate to it? If you can help it would be great. The donation page is: caepunchathon.org. Let me know if it’s doable. Thanks, and talk to you soon!

There are so many reasons why we look forward to the Punch-a-thon – aside from all of the fabulous raffle and silent auction items we’ve got lined up!
Many of you are quite familiar with CAE’s mission and “why we punch” – it’s the same reasons why you’ve contributed in the past and continue to help support us. But for those of you are newer, or may have forgotten, we thought it’d be a good idea to provide you with a quick refresher.
- It’s a fundamental human right to live a life free of violence. For 36 years, CAE and its programs have enabled participants to prevent, heal from and respond to violence.
- It helps us serve low-income families who might not otherwise be able to afford our programs. We offer our violence-prevention courses on a sliding fee scale. Courses for survivors are free of charge; free childcare is available at all classes.
- It has tremendous impact. It only takes $25 to enroll a child in a workshop on bullying and de-escalation skills; as much as $500 will allow 20 domestic violence survivors to learn strategies for self-defense and violence-prevention. Any contribution has a direct impact on our ability to share strategies for countering violence in the lives of women, children, teens, and LGBT individuals.
- It directly supports our highly effective FREE after-school programs for teens, as well as vital self-defense and empowerment programs for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
We’re so excited that you’ll be a part of this year’s Punch-a-thon… see you in just a few days!!
May 18, 2011 / by CAE / Make A Comment / Filed under 2011 Punch-a-thon
We’re just two weeks away from the big event!
We’ve seen some great response to our “Like” campaign on Facebook (check it out if you haven’t already!) and also some great interest from the CAE community. Now is the push is ON to help us reach our goal of raising $50,000.
For those of you who have come to past Punch-a-thon’s, you’ll know that one of the exciting parts of the day is the prize raffle. We’re excited to continue that this year, and encourage you to come to the event, buy a ticket (or 2… or 5…) and try your luck! We’ll have prizes donated by some of your local Brooklyn favorites, including gift certificates to Rachel’s Taqueria, Ladybird Bakery and Jack Rabbit Sports. Hope you win!!
This year, we’re also adding a Silent Auction for some of our bigger prizes. Come to the event and place your bid for one of our awesome donations. At the end of the event, whoever bid the highest for that item, wins! Already we have some great auction items lined up: a set of celebrity chef cookbooks donated by American Express, a 3-month free membership for two to Chelsea Piers, some private coaching and personal training sessions donated by members of the CAE family… and more!
Stay tuned for more updates, and best of luck to you!!

Like us on Facebook and earn us a buck!
Help support The Center for Anti-Violence Education’s mission to change in the lives of women, LGBT people, teen women, children, and other communities especially affected by violence. For every new “Like” we get on Facebook between now and our annual fundraising Punch-a-thon on June 5th, CAE will receive a $1 donation from board member Mieke Vandersall to help support this important work.
(If you already Like us please comment below and share on Facebook to help spread the word!)
Recently we spoke to Mieke Vandersall—who is both an active board member AND a karate student at CAE—about this generous matching gift. (Interview excerpted below).
CAE: Thank you so much for this donation. Can you tell us more about why you chose to give in this way?
Mieke: I want as many people as possible to know about CAE. Its programs are truly life-changing and are needed in every nook and cranny of this society. Facebook is such a potentially viral medium. If you share it with 50 friends and they each share it with 50, you’ve suddenly raised an incredible amount of awareness through a very simple action.
CAE: Why are CAE’s programs so important to you?
Mieke: I think of how much violence I could have avoided and prevented if I had had these programs as a child. While it makes me sad for myself and for others like me, I am hopeful for how much change we can create and inspire for young people coming up through our programs today.
CAE: How has CAE impacted your life?
Mieke: I’ve been a student in CAE’s ongoing martial arts program for the past seven years. Studying karate has changed for the better how I move through the world, physically, spiritually and emotionally. I would love to help others experience that change as well.
We are so grateful to Mieke for helping to support CAE’s transformative violence prevention programs in this unique and thoughtful way. Thank you, Mieke!

All of us at The Center for Anti-Violence Education (CAE) are thrilled to launch our 6th Annual Punch-a-thon.
We’re fired up this year for a great event — more raffles, more visitors, more FUN! And most of all, for building strength in ourselves and in our communities to prevent, counter and heal from violence.
Please join us in reaching our goals this year to:
- Raise $50,000 in pledges to support our programs to end violence and stand up for justice;
- Build community awareness of violence prevention;
- Complete 1,000 punches representing confidence and empowerment for all survivors of violence.
Together, we have transformed thousands of lives. Join us by signing up to punch, or by making a pledge, and help us reach thousands more!
